Star Citizen Free Fly: how to play the game for free
Several times a year, Cloud Imperium Games drops the paywall and lets anyone into the live universe. Here is what a Free Fly actually covers, the months these windows keep coming back in, how to get in, and the one thing new players get wrong on the way through the door.
What a Free Fly actually gets you
Star Citizen is not free-to-play. Normally you need a game package — a paid access bundle sold by Roberts Space Industries — before the servers will let you connect. A Free Fly is a stretch of time, usually twelve or thirteen days, during which Cloud Imperium Games waives that requirement: anyone can make a free account, download the client, and fly. No credit card, no trial subscription, nothing to cancel afterward.
This is not a cut-down demo build. You land on the same servers as people who have spent thousands of dollars on the game, running the same patch, with the same missions, the same locations and the same bugs. The one real difference is the hangar. Instead of owning a ship, you get a rotating selection of loaners that you claim in game, and the roster changes as the event runs.
CIG builds each Free Fly around something: an in-game convention on ArcCorp or microTech, a ship sale, and almost always a Twitch Drops campaign running in parallel. The free access is the hook; the sale is the reason they do it.
What you can and can't do during a Free Fly
This is the part most people get wrong before they start, so here it is flat.
| During a Free Fly | Possible? |
|---|---|
| Log into the live persistent universe | Yes — same build and same servers as paying players |
| Missions, trading, mining, salvage, bounties, FPS combat | Yes — no career or content is locked behind the paywall |
| Fly ships | A free selection, rotated during the event and claimed in game |
| Earn aUEC and reputation | Yes, and it stays on the account until the next alpha wipe |
| Keep a ship once the event ends | No — loaners are removed when the window closes |
| Keep playing past the end date | No, unless you buy a game package |
| Play on Steam, PS5 or Xbox | No — PC only, through the RSI Launcher |
In other words: the whole game for a limited time, not a slice of the game forever.
When do Free Fly events happen?
CIG does not publish a yearly calendar, and every event is announced anywhere from a few days to a few weeks ahead through a comm-link on the official site. What they do have is a rhythm, and the record over the last several years is consistent enough to plan a vacation day around.
| Event | Free Fly window | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Intergalactic Aerospace Expo 2952 | Nov 18 – 30, 2022 | 12 days |
| Invictus Launch Week 2953 | May 19 – 30, 2023 | 11 days |
| Intergalactic Aerospace Expo 2953 | Nov 17 – 30, 2023 | 13 days |
| Invictus Launch Week 2954 | May 17 – 29, 2024 | 12 days |
| Intergalactic Aerospace Expo 2954 | Nov 22 – Dec 5, 2024 | 13 days |
| Invictus Launch Week 2955 | May 15 – 27, 2025 | 12 days |
| Intergalactic Aerospace Expo 2955 | Nov 20 – Dec 3, 2025 | 13 days |
| Drake DefenseCon 2956 | May 14 – 27, 2026 | 13 days |
| Foundation Festival 2956 | Jul 29 – Aug 10, 2026 | 12 days |
The May window — the military expo
For years this was Invictus Launch Week, a UEE Navy recruitment show at the Bevic Convention Center in Area 18, on ArcCorp: combat-focused manufacturers such as Aegis, Anvil and Drake, and usually a capital ship like the Idris parked outside for walkthroughs. In 2026 the lore rearranged itself and Drake Interplanetary hosted DefenseCon in its place. Worth noting for anyone searching by name: the branding changed, the mid-May Free Fly did not.
The late-November window — the IAE
The Intergalactic Aerospace Expo is the biggest event of the Star Citizen year and, by a wide margin, the best Free Fly. Manufacturers take over the show floor one day at a time, each unlocking its own lineup for free flight, and by the closing days most of the catalog is available at once — the 2024 edition put more than 150 ships in rotation. If you are only going to try this game once, try it in late November.
Everything else
Between those two anchors, CIG opens shorter windows with no fixed schedule: after a major patch lands, around a community event, or tied to a newcomer-focused festival like the Foundation Festival, which paired free access with its official mentorship program. Fewer ships, same access to the game.
How to check whether a Free Fly is live right now
Since no one can tell you the next date, here is how to find out in about thirty seconds — this works whenever you happen to read this page:
- The RSI homepage. A live Free Fly takes over the front page with a banner and a prominent "play for free" call to action. If the homepage is selling ships and saying nothing about free access, there is no event running.
- The Comm-Link feed on the official site. Events are announced there first, typically one to three weeks out, with the exact start and end times in UTC.
- Twitch. A Star Citizen Drops campaign almost always runs alongside a Free Fly. If Drops are live, access usually is too.
- r/starcitizen. The subreddit stickies every event within minutes of the announcement, and the comment threads flag the practical stuff faster than official channels do.
As of this update, on August 1, 2026, the Foundation Festival window is open and free access runs through August 10.
How to join a Free Fly, step by step
- Create a free RSI account. Signup costs nothing. This is also the only moment the referral code question is on the table — more on that below.
- Confirm your email. RSI sends an activation link and the account does nothing until you click it. Use a real address; this account is permanent.
- Add the free trial package to your account. There is a button for it on the event page. Skip this step and the launcher will refuse to log you in, which is the single most common "the free fly isn't working" complaint.
- Download the RSI Launcher from your account page. It is the only distribution channel for this game.
- Install the client. Budget around 150 GB on an SSD. Start this on day one of the window, not on the last weekend.
- Log in and claim a ship. You spawn in a habitation unit; ships are pulled from an ASOP terminal in the spaceport, under the Rentals or Loaner tab.
Check your machine before you start the download
There is no lightweight Free Fly build. You install the same client everyone else runs — roughly 150 GB, on an SSD, since mechanical drives are no longer supported. Nothing sours a trial faster than spending three days of a twelve-day window downloading a game your PC then chugs through at fifteen frames per second in Area 18.
The two things that actually decide whether the experience is pleasant are memory and storage speed, and they are worth settling before the window opens rather than during it. Full component-by-component requirements, how the RSI Launcher handles patching, and exactly how much free disk space to leave are all on the download Star Citizen page. Read it the week before, not the morning of.
Three things that make a trial window go better
- Use the Guide System. CIG runs an official mentorship program that pairs new players with experienced volunteers, and it is much faster than working out the transit systems and mission terminals on your own.
- Base yourself at a space station, not a planetside city, for your first few hours. Stations are compact, the elevators are shorter, and they hold up better when servers are loaded, which they always are during a Free Fly.
- Link your Twitch account. Drops rewards earned during an event are account-bound cosmetics, which means they stay with you long after the loaner ships are gone.
What to actually do with those first hours — the controls that matter, the missions worth taking, the mistakes that cost you an evening — is covered on the Star Citizen beginner guide.
What stays on your account when the window closes
At the cutoff time, servers stop accepting connections from accounts without a game package. That is not the same as losing everything.
What you keep:
- The RSI account itself, permanently, with its handle and its history.
- The referral code attached at signup — and with it, the right to 50,000 UEC the day you buy your first game package, whether that is next week or next year.
- The aUEC and reputation you earned, until the next alpha wipe.
- Account-bound event rewards, including Twitch Drops cosmetics.
What goes away: the ships loaned for the event, and server access, until the next Free Fly or a purchase.
One distinction is worth burning into memory, because it trips up almost every newcomer. UEC — the referral currency — is account-bound and survives wipes. aUEC is the alpha currency you earn by playing, and it gets reset with major patches. They are spelled almost identically and they are not the same thing.
Why a Free Fly is the best possible moment to use a referral code
Here is the part most Free Fly guides skip, and it costs their readers real money. The Star Citizen referral program fires exactly once per account, at creation. You type the code into the Referral Code field on the signup form, or you add it from your account page within 24 hours. After that, nobody can help you — RSI support does not apply codes retroactively, and the linked code can never be changed.
Now look at when accounts get created. A Free Fly is precisely the moment when tens of thousands of people sign up for RSI accounts at the same time, in a hurry, with a 150 GB download waiting on them. The Referral Code field sits there blank, they click through it without a thought, and four months later they buy a starter pack and find out the 50,000 UEC is permanently off the table.
The logic is simple enough. If you are about to try the game during a Free Fly, fill the field in at signup. It commits you to nothing, costs nothing, and requires no purchase. If the game doesn't land for you, the code sits on a dormant account and nothing happens. If it does land — and for a lot of people it does, eventually — the bonus is waiting on the day you buy your first package. The reward has been 50,000 UEC since CIG overhauled the program in July 2025, up from the 5,000 it used to be, and during events CIG sometimes stacks a promotional extra on top for accounts that sign up with a code and then buy a starter pack.
The code below is mine. The link pre-fills the field in the official Roberts Space Industries signup form — you get your UEC, I get credit in CIG's recruitment program. That's the whole arrangement. The referral code page breaks down how the program works, and how much Star Citizen costs covers what a game package runs if the trial convinces you.
Free Fly questions, answered
No. Star Citizen is not a free-to-play game. Outside of Free Fly windows you need a paid game package to log in. A Free Fly is a limited period, announced by Cloud Imperium Games, during which that requirement is lifted for everyone. It is a window, not a permanent status.
No. You need a free Roberts Space Industries account, and then you add the free trial package to that account on the official site. No payment method is requested at any point. The only real cost is the download: the client runs roughly 150 GB and has to sit on an SSD.
Cloud Imperium Games announces each Free Fly a few days to a few weeks ahead, with no published yearly calendar. Two windows have recurred every year since 2022: a military-themed expo in the second half of May and the Intergalactic Aerospace Expo in late November, which is by far the most generous in ships. Extra one-off windows show up in between. Any site listing confirmed future dates is guessing from past years.
Yes, and it is the single best moment to use one. An account created during a Free Fly is an ordinary RSI account: the Referral Code field is right there in the signup form, and the code can also be added from your account page within 24 hours. After that window closes, no code can ever be attached to that account.
Your RSI account is permanent, along with the referral code attached to it and the 50,000 UEC that will be credited whenever you buy your first game package. The aUEC and reputation you earned stay until the next alpha wipe, and account-bound event rewards such as Twitch Drops stay with you. What disappears is the loaner ships and server access, until the next Free Fly or a purchase.
No. Star Citizen is a PC-only game distributed exclusively through the RSI Launcher, downloaded from the Roberts Space Industries website. It is not on Steam, not on the Epic Games Store, and not on consoles. Free Fly events change nothing about that.
